15th President of the Philippines

Yesterday was a historical day as President Elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III was inaugurated as the 15th President of the Philippines. He had a remarkable speech. Here’s part of it:

“Today marks the end of a regime indifferent to the appeals of the people. It is not Noynoy who found a way. You are the reason why the silent suffering of the nation is about to end. This is the beginning of my burden, but if many of us will bear the cross we will lift it, no matter how heavy it is.

Through good governance in the coming years, we will lessen our problems. The destiny of the Filipino will return to its rightful place, and as each year passes, the Filipino’s problems will continue to lessen with the assurance of progress in their lives.

We are here to serve and not to lord over you. The mandate given to me was one of change. I accept your marching orders to transform our government from one that is self-serving to one that works for the welfare of the nation.”

I hope that Noynoy will be a good leader to our country. I hope that he fulfills his promises to the nation.

Peaceful Inauguration

The whole country was focused on yesterday’s presidential inauguration. President Noynoy Aquino took his oath as the 15th President of the country and promised to help the nation rise from its problems. The inauguration was blessed with good weather.  Weather reports predicted a rainy Wednesday but thankfully the weather cooperated that morning.  Thousands of people flocked to Quirino Granstand in Manila. A lot of people were wearing yellow. Many of them were carrying yellow promotional umbrellas and yellow fans.  It was a peaceful and well organized event.

Manila Ocean Park Experience

We had a great time at Manila Ocean Park yesterday. Yohan and his cousins enjoyed exploring the Oceanarium and the Jellies. This photo was taken inside the Jellies section. They call these jelly fish the dancing fairies. They are lovely and enchanting to watch.

We also had a chance to watch the Aquatica light and fountain show. It was a spectacular medley of fountain display, lights and live performance.

I Exercised My Right to Vote

Yesterday I casted my voted along with the rest of the nation. I was in line for about an hour before getting inside the polling room. It was a hot afternoon but people waited in line patiently. I’m glad there was no sign of violence in our area.  Everything went smoothly. It felt great when the PCOS machine accepted my filled out ballot without a hitch.

I’m impressed how fast the results are coming from different sectors of the country.  The first automated election in the country was a success.

I hope and pray the new leaders of the country will give us a brighter future.

Goodbye President Cory

“I would rather die a meaningful death than to live a meaningless life.”
~Corazon Aquino~

Last Aug. 1, 2009, former President Corazon Aquino passed away. It was a very sad day for many Filipinos. She has been a great, honorable and honest leader. She will always be remembered and loved by the people. I couldn’t help but cry as I watched Cory’s necrological services earlier on television. It was touching to hear the people close to her talk about their relationship with the late President.

Former Corazon Aquino will be buried tomorrow, Aug. 5, 2009 at Manila Memorial Park. Malacañang has declared tomorrow a special non-working holiday.

St. Rafael Feast Day

Filed under: Events, Info Corner — Tags: , — rachel @ 3:53 pm

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usLast October 24 was the feast day of St. Rafael.  My in-laws live in the town of San Rafael and every year, they prepare a small feast in honor of their town’s patron saint.  It’s their way of saying thank you for the blessings bestowed to them each year.

My mother-in-law is still in the States having a vacation but my brother-in-law made sure there was still a small feast for the family.

I ate a lot that night. It’s so hard to maintain a diet when there is always good food around. I might just need the help of alli, a non-prescription, FDA approved diet pill to lose some much needed weight.

My Son Dreams of Watching a Live Rodeo Show

Filed under: Events, Info Corner — Tags: — rachel @ 3:21 pm

I think every young boy wants to be a cowboy at some point. I remember when we were kids, my younger brother had a toy lasso and a cowboy hat. He wore it to costume parties we attended before. I have to admit, I also wanted to be a cowgirl and I even wanted my own horse. Of course, it wasn’t possible to have my own horse but I was able to ride one when we went to my uncle’s farm many years ago. It makes me smile thinking of the good old days.

Now that I have become a mother, I realized that dreaming of becoming a cowboy is natural among children. My 4-year old son has repeatedly shown interest in wanting to be a great cowboy. His grandmother even sewed a cowboy vest especially for him and I bought him a nice cowboy hat. There was a time we were able to watch a rodeo event on television and Yohan enjoyed watching the exciting activities.

I would like to bring my son to watch a live rodeo show someday so he can see real cowboys in person. I heard of The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo that takes place at Houston’s Reliant Stadium every March. It would be wonderful to get hold of Houston Rodeo concert tickets, preferably center seats and the nearer the better. I’m sure my son would be thrilled to witness such a fun and exciting rodeo show.

Hot Air Balloon Extravaganza

My family and I had a magnificent time at the 12th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Festival held at Clark, Pampanga. We were there to witness the grand sports aviation event last weekend, Feb. 9 and 10.

We had a spectacular time watching events such as skydiving, paragliding, choreographed kite flying, aerobatic display and the much anticipated Hot Air Balloon flight.
